Finally, MxHacks is around the corner. After more than 2 years of working from home, and no in-person MxWorld, it’s time for a good old hackathon. Let me share the 4 main reasons why I’m attending with my team from Low-code Academy this year.

Learning

One of the core activities of a developer is making stuff work. For me, the game of modeling an app, using my existing knowledge, and finding out things I don’t know yet, is THE most fun part of a project. Discovering things can be done in multiple ways.

As a seasoned Mendix trainer, I start to learn new things by following training and workshops. Good training will share new insights in a structured way. Quick knowledge, to the point, and instantly applicable. Just like we do for our customers every day at Low-code Academy.

MxHacks is packed with training and workshops by the Mendix Academy and Mendix experts. You can find them all and when they are happening on the MxHacks schedule.

The training and workshops offered are for developers at all experience levels.

Are you new to Mendix and want to gain experience as a developer with this hackathon?

Take the Crash course training and/or Create a Custom Registration System for your App.

Are you a more experienced Mendix Developer and want to learn about advanced topics?

Then grab the opportunity to learn more about Building a Native Mobile App in Mendix.

One of the workshops I definitely recommend during the event, is by Bizzomate about their Dev Tools. I have already played around with their tools myself, and I’m very pleased with the results. Without wanting to spoil their workshop: your security might not be as secure as you thought. 😉

Connection

A second way of gaining knowledge is to connect with fellow Mendix developers to exchange ideas. Gaining knowledge using documentation, the Forum & the Academy is a nice start; but in my view, there is no better way to learn than from other developers. Being able to connect with fellow Mendix makers and learning from each other is inspiring and fun.

Sharing insights with fellow developers about technical solutions and project dynamics; spreading lessons I have learned on how challenges have been solved or could be solved in the future.

For me, these are the most valuable ways of improving myself as a Mendix Maker. The Mendix community is a vibrant and open community, with many developers willing to share their experiences. And these connections last longer than just a hackathon. Whenever I get stuck on a challenge, I often ping a fellow Mendix developer for support. And the opposite is true as well.

And of course, eating pizza and drinking good beer together is the icing on the cake. 😉

Fun

As Mendix developers we have the best job. We work with enormous pleasure for our customers, and our colleagues are awesome. A two-day challenge to solve a development puzzle together acts like a catalyst, where all this is brought together. You get to know and bond with your teammates better.

I’ll definitely have to practice my table tennis skills again, I haven’t played a good game of table tennis since I left Mendix a few years ago. So I’m calling out to all attending in Rotterdam: who’s up for a game?

I’ve also heard rumors about other games being available too, including mention of a ‘game master’.

Low-code for good

Last but not least, MxHacks is aimed at low-code for good, or in Mendix language: Modeling for good. For each region, a non-profit organization has been selected, and participants will work together in their teams to build a Mendix application to support their cause.

To others, it may seem like just hanging out with friends and messing around on our computers and playing games. While in reality, taking part in this event means I will create something which will contribute to a better world.

At the moment of writing, I don’t know which non-profit organization Mendix has chosen, but I’m looking forward to hearing about the organization selected for my region and the challenge to solve which comes with it.

So if you like pizza, making new friends, learning new skills, or helping the world with the skills you already have — go grab yourself a spot and register for this year's MxHacks at 👉https://mxhacks.mendixcloud.com/
